Design of a wideband planar printed pattern-reconfigurable antenna and its application in wideband phased linear array

In this article, a wideband planar printed pattern-reconfigurable antenna built on rotating dipole radiation arms is proposed. Eight PIN diodes and three DC controlling voltages are utilized to switch three working states for generating multi-beam. Two parasitic grounding strips are employed to widen impedance bandwidth and enhance pattern offset directivity. By optimizing rotation angles of the radiation rams, desired wideband characteristics are achieved. Measured results show that the 10-dB impedance operation bandwidth for all modes is 44.5% from 2.05 to 3.23 GHz within a compact size of 0.34 lambda x 0.35 lambda x 0.007 lambda, where lambda is the vacuum wavelength at the low frequency. A typical application in phased linear array based on the proposed antenna is investigated and discussed, which shows that it can work in a wide operation band, and the scanning angle in E-plane is more than +/- 80 degrees.
