Comparable with other chronic inflammatory conditions, infection with Helicobacter pylori has been linked to a reduced growth in children and an increased risk of coronary heart disease, although socioeconomic factors confuse the issue. The results of large prospective and interventional studies, currently in progress, are eagerly awaited. The association of H. pylori with other extradigestive diseases, such as functional vascular diseases and skin and endocrine autoimmune diseases, has been recently described. An interesting relationship between seropositivity to H. pylori, serum glucose and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus is worthy of further attention.
