Zero-field spin splitting in topological quantum wells

摘要
We calculate the zero-magnetic-field spin splitting in quantum wells formed in topologically nontrivial bulk crystals. The momentum-dependent Rashba coefficient is expressed via parameters of the microscopic model of topological insulators. It is shown that the spin-split quantum well electron spectrum contains counterpropagating spin-locked modes. These modes need to be taken into account to distinguish between the contributions to spin polarization originating from helical surface fermions and quantum well states of a bulk crystal.
