Luminescence properties of cerium (III) in silica glass prepared by the sol-gel process

The absorption spectra for Ce-doped sols from tetramethoxysilane showed that most Ce3+ existed as [Ce(OH2)(9)](3+). The luminescence of Ce3+ exhibited a peak around 360 nm for aqueous solutions and sols, indicating that the emissive species is [Ce(OH2)(8)](3+) mainly produced from photodissociation of [Ce(OH2)(9)](3+). The absorption and emission spectra for xerogels aged 6 month were virtually the same as those of solutions, meaning that the same phenomenon occurs for xerogels. Longer wavelength emission was also observed, particularly for basic xerogels, possibly due to Ce3+ associated with Ce4+.
