Culture of the alternative and Student Centre's Multimedia Centre

This paper presents the information and the circumstances revolving the formation of SC's Multimedia Centre (MM Centre) founded in Zagreb in 1976, the types of its activities in the subsequent years as well as the background and consequences of the Centre's diminishing role since the 1990s. Founded as a programmatic solution to be used as part of a modernist cluster of activities in SC Culture, the MM Centre has from its very beginnings offered various representational and productive contents in its programme and they can be classified as: 1) interdisciplinarity programmes; 2) urban actions; 3) new media programmes; 4) regular programme of Yugoslavian experimental film; 5) regular programme of world experimental film; 6) local and foreign video art programme; 7) experimental film production programme (early stages of the MM Centre); 8) alternative artistic film programmes. The paper explains each of the above mentioned activities in detail, as well as the conditions in which the Centre established itself as an important factor in the creation of an alternative film culture in Croatia and its region.
