摘要：

It is shown that the photospheric temperature of eta Carinae is lower than currently believed and cannot excite the lines of HeI 10830, [ArIII], [NeIII], [FeIII]. A new source of energy is proposed to exist near the star, probably powered by a shocked wind. The 5.52 year cycles of Eta Car are uncomfortably too coherent for a variability of the S Doradus type. These cycles are the key to understand the nature of this intriguing star.
