摘要：

One intends to elucidate what Rousseau understands by democracy in the Social contract and. subsequently, to analyze the merits and difficulties associated by him to said regime. Therefore, one must shed light to the distinction between sovereignty and government as well as to its implications to the Rousseauian understanding of the mechanism of political representation. One must add that this examination will have as background an appraisal on thie relevance of a recurring claim in studies conceming the history of political ideas according to which the Genevan would be the "father of moderm democraey"
