摘要
Since scale in water supplying pipes is one of the major sources of water contamination and users' complaint, detection of scale is very important for the proper maintenance of water piping. In the present study, the potential of guided waves is explored for the detection of scale accumulated inside surface of water supplying pipes. For this purpose, the dispersion characteristics of a water supply pipe are investigated using an analytical solution, and the ultrasonic guided wave modes and their wave structures are revealed theoretically. In addition, several modes of guided waves are generated and identified experimentally. From the experiments, it is observed that the flexural modes with the mode number of 2 are optimal for the detection of scale. An explanation to this experimental observation is made from the theoretical analysis on the wave structures.
