A study was carried out to investigate the public attitudes towards the mentally ill, as well as to determinate possible differences related to main sociodemographic variables. The results obtained show that neither gender nor socioeconomic level are significant variables related to those attitudes. In relation to the age, the data obtained from the people interviewed show a tendency to express more positive beliefs, attitudes and behavioral intentions among the youngest. Concerning the educational level, more favorable expressions were found as welt as higher the level, until preparatory or technical school. The information obtained may constitute a base to understand the attitudes of frighten, unwillingness and shame frequently manifested in relation to mental illness, and from this comprehension, to take actions aimed to its modification.
