Free hydrogen bonds in alcohol solutions with inert solvents

摘要
Raman spectra were obtained for alcohol solutions with inert solvents such as CCl4, CHCl3, etc. The frequency of the OH stretching vibrations [nu (OH)(free) band] due to free hydrogen bonds varies with change in either alcohol or inert solvent. It is shown that the frequency of the nu (OH)(free) band is sensitive to the shape of the head group of an inert solvent. The main cause for the frequency change of the nu (oH)(free) band with change in alcohol is ascribed to the change of effective mass of the vibrating unit (RO-H, R = alkyl group).
