Effect of compatibilizer and curing system on the thermal degradation of natural rubber EVA copolymer blends

The effect of blend ratio and the compatibilization/curing process on the thermal ageing of natural rubber (NR)/ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) blends have been investigated. Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl mercaptoacetate) (EVASH) was employed as compatibilizing agent and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as curing agent. The resistance to thermal ageing is better for those blends containing EVASH. The efficiency of EVASH as a stabilizer for rubber degradation is also indicated by thermogravimetric analysis and by the determination of the molecular weight of the rubber phase after processing and ageing.
