This paper gives a general introduction to fracture mechanics application to railway components as well as to the papers within this special issue. It is preluded by a brief discussion of various fracture control concepts such as safe-life, fail-safe and damage tolerance. Following this, an introduction to the most important damage tolerance issues of safety relevant railway components such as axles, wheels and rails is provided. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
