The medical services of the statutory health insurance bodies in Germany are being commissioned with evaluations concerning the necessity and duration of inpatient treatments (primary, secondary and tertiary misquartering) and the correctness of diagnosis and procedure coding. These audits affect the daily routine of hospital physicians, as they demand a large amount of time. This review describes frequent constellations of audits in neurological hospitals, typical problems between hospital neurologists and the medical services and points out the special situations with private insurances
