Kinetics of oxidation of aliphatic acids by quinolinium dichromate

摘要
The oxidation of acetic, propionic and butyric acids by quinolinium dichromate (QDC) gave glyoxylic acid, pyruvic acid and 2-ketobutyric acid, respectively. The rate of the reaction showed a first order dependence on the concentrations of each (QDC, substrate and H+). The mechanism involved the formation of a cyclic chromate ester, which underwent decomposition in a slow step to give the products.
