摘要
The paper discusses the alloy design and process technology adopted at Bhilai Steel Plant for the production of high tensile plates conforming to SAILMA-450 HI specification. The steel has been successfully developed and used upto 32 mm thickness in as-rolled condition for various end-applications, namely, impeller, bridges, excavators and mining machineries. A comprehensive study was carried out to assess the weldability properties of the steel using SMAW process. Implant and elastic restraint cracking (ERC) tests established the necessity to rebake the electrodes before welding in order to impart adequate cold cracking resistance to the steel. Optimised welding conditions were formulated based on the above tests. The weld joint was subjected to extensive tests to assess the physical properties and soundness of the weld joint. The weld joint exhibited excellent strength (60.3 kg mm(-2)) and low temperature impact toughness (6 and 7.6 kg-m at -20C for WM and HAZ) properties. COD tests were carried out for PM, HAZ and WM and was found to be 0.40, 0.41 and 0.28 mm respectively. It was concluded that the weld joint conforms to the requirements of SAILMA-450 HI specification and ensures a high integrity of the fabricated products.
