Heteroelements, useful tools for the study of potential surfaces: the example of the phosphorus/ boron combination and 1,3-diradicals The stabilisation of transient species is not only a stimulating challenge for synthetic chemists but also a valuable source of informations. The various approaches used to characterize, or even isolate, such species are presented for carbocations. The example of 1,3-diradicals is then detailed, highlighting the interest of heteroelements, and more particularly of the phosphorus/boron combination.
