摘要
A re-engineering of part of the Northern Cross radiotelescope for concepts verifications and technology developments for a next generation radiotelescope (Square Kilometre Array double right arrow SKA) is here described. The Northern Cross is an array, composed of 5632 dipoles and represents one of the largest collecting areas in the northern hemisphere (30.000 m(2)). Such a re-instrumentation could produce a 1% SKA demonstrator at a low cost and it might be ready to operate somewhere in 2006. In this paper an overview of the BEST-3 (Basic Element for SKA Training) is presented. Beamforming, adaptive beamforming and multibeaming concepts verifications, algorithms and low cost technology development will be possible with such a test bed.
