Islamic Republic of Iran's Meteorological Organization (IRIMO), under the direction of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to improve its forecasting capabilities and issuance of flash flood warnings, is in the process of implementing the first phase of its advanced weather radar network in Iran. This phase of the project consists of three Doppler weather radars that will be installed sometime in mid-2001. The radars are two C-band and one S-band that will be installed in northwest and southwest and in the north near the major population center in Tehran. The design considerations based on regional hydrology and climatology as well as urban population requirements are presented. The wavelength dependency and polarization diversity is discussed. The complex topography of the region affects the design consideration and complicates the site selection process. Factors affecting the site selection process are also presented.
