Individuation, stress, and problem-solving abilities of college students

Researchers examined the relationships among individuation (a developmental variable), stress level, and problem-solving abilities of college students. 249 White students, 8 Black students and 4 Hispanic students (n = 261) completed four scales from the Personal Authority in the Family System Questionnaire-Version C, the Stress subscale of the Psychological Distress Inventory, and the Problem-Solving Inventory. Significant relationships were found between individuation level and problem-solving ability and between stress level and problem-solving ability. Implications for counseling and for future research are discussed.
