Autoantibodies against serotonin receptors (5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, 5-HT2Q in serum of patients with mental disorder

Testing the autoimmune hypothesis of mental disorder sera from patients with paranoid schizophrenia, and schizoaffective psychosis were screened for antibodies against 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, and 5-HT2C receptors by ELISA. Patients with depression, chronic alcoholism, and controls were also investigated. Antigens were transfected COS-1 cells. Antibodies were detected in all test groups without any statistical difference. These antibodies seem to be natural autoantibodies which probably protect the organism from autoimmunity by binding and neutralizing intruding antigens similar to important epitopes (5-HT receptors).
