Introduction: Ocular motility problems are common in thyroid eye disease. The aim of this paper is to look at the results of extra-ocular muscle surgery in these patients and the use of adjustable sutures. Methods: A retrospective review of notes of patients who had undergone extra-ocular muscle surgery for thyroid eye disease in the last five years was performed. Results: Fifty-four patients were identified and 49 sets of records were reviewed. Twenty-four patients had had a previous orbital decompression. Ninety one percent of patients were satisfied with the surgery. Adjustable sutures were used in 90% of cases. Discussion: Extra-ocular muscle surgery in these patients is safe and appropriate. The complications of surgery and use of adjustable sutures is discussed.
