Whether the bone marrow microenvironment can contribute to development of blood borne cancers is controversial. In a recent issue of Nature, Raaijmakers et al. (2010) show that deletion of Dicerl specifically in osteoprogenitors not only impaired their differentiation but also resulted in disrupted blood formation and secondary leukemia.
