Low cost Ti(Al,O)/Al2O3 and TixAly/Al2O3 composites

By using a combination of high energy mechanical milling, thermal treatment, pressing, sintering and hipping, bulk Ti(Al,O)/Al2O3, Ti3Al/Al2O3 and TiAl/Al2O3 composites with reasonably high density were successfully produced from low cost Al and TiO2 powders. The titanium rich phase in the compositions contain 5.30at% dissolved oxygen. All the composites show moderate bending strength in the range of 200-250MPa, and a low fracture oxidation toughness, ranging 2 to 4 MPa m0.5. The high temperature oxidation resistance of Ti(Al,O)/Al2O3 composite is very high.
