Mass density in hydration shells of ions

The densities of the first hydration shells of 43 different ions are calculated on the basis of an electrostatic and thermodynamic approach applying the concept of a local electrostriction pressure. The plot of the local density in the hydration shells, as a function of the reduced (divided by square root of valence) distances from the centres of ions, presents a common smooth line even for ions with different valences.
