Long-term effects of selected farming measures on weed infestation in cereals The present study is based on long-term trials which have run over 8, and sometimes 17, years. The experiments investigated the influence of crop rotation, tillage and nitrogen fertilization, combined with different levels of intensity of herbicide use or harrowing of cereal fields, on weed infestation. Crop rotation, tillage and nitrogen fertilization influence both weed density and dominance structure of the weed flora in the long run. Negative effects of these factors can be decreased but not prevented by situation-related herbicide use. Long-term effects are recognised after 5 years at the earliest. A period of up to 20 years seems adequate to elaborate concepts and strategies for successful, sustainable, and environmentally friendly weed control.
