摘要
The art house, where many film lovers found their cinematic calling, is in a state of uneasy transition, as more mainstream fare crowds through its doors. And DVD's have hurt the market. But good things can come in small packages, and so it is with niche-oriented microcinemas, which are gaining traction by showcasing off-the-beaten-track fare in unexpected places. Alvin, herself a microcinema programmer, traces the roots of the movement and praises it for putting the thrill of discovery back into film appreciation: "There is a fringe to the fringe, an outer edge where new elements rise to the surface-some good, some bad."
