Synthesis and characterization of an yttrium(III) cryptate

[Y(H2L)(NO3)(H2O)](NO3) . 5H(2)O was synthesized by the (2 + 3) condensation of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) with 2,6-diformyl-4-chlorophenol (dcp) in the presence of Y(III) ion as the template. The complex has been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivity, IR spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry. An X-ray diffraction study suggested that the coordination number of Y(III) ion is nine and the coordination geometry of Y(III) is a monocapped square antiprism. There is an uncoordinated water molecule incorporated in the macrocycle.
