Selection of multistage excavation method has a special importance in the large section tunnels. It depends on some parameters such as rock type, geomechanical properties, rock mass, tunnel size, etc. This research is aimed to investigate the excavation method in the Imam Zadeh Hashem tunnel as a case study. For this purpose, two excavation methods, namely pilot and extending excavation method and heading-bench excavation method have been compared using numerical methods and FLAC-2D software. The results obtained from the model demonstrate the utility and suitability of pilot excavation due to its reduction in the excavation span.
