Infertility in a male Mastiff

A male Mastiff dog was referred for infertility. The animal's general health appeared normal. Two microscopic examinations of the sperm were performed at an interval of a few days. The first, with no hitch present, revealed an azoospermia. The second, in the presence of a bitch, demonstrated oligoastheno-theratosperma. Infection or retrograde ejaculation was excluded by absence of leucocytes and alkaline phosphatase in the ejaculate. Further tests were not performed due to financial reasons. Diagnosis of the cause of infertility must include an accurate case history and a good clinical examination. Where no functional abnormality is found, a microscopic examination of sperm is necessary. A complete endoncrinological screen may he necessary. Specific conditions affecting the prostate and testicles may be found on ultrasonographic examination. The efficacy of treatment undertaken will depend on the accuracy of the diagnosis.
