Non-ammonium salt deliming process using sulfuric acid and magnesium sulfate was investigated in order to reduce nitrogen load in waste liquors from tanneries. Using 10% magnesium sulfate and 0.15% sulfuric acid of the weight of salted pigskins, it was possible to achieve satisfactory deliming. In combination with usage of non-ammonium salt bating agent, total nitrogen in bating effluent was reduced to about 10% compared to the conventional deliming and bating method. Leathers resulting from deliming with sulfuric acid and magnesium sulfate are comparable to leathers delimed with ammonium sulfate.
