New aspects on the setting chemistry of zinc phosphate cement

This paper reviews the clinical status of zinc phosphate cement including new results about the setting chemistry obtained from structural investigations. The material has a tendency to undergo gradual phase separation on setting, leading to a domain structure in the solid state. During the phase separation metastable intermediates are formed, thereby retarding the attainment of thermodynamic equilibrium. Implications for clinical use are highlighted.
