This paper includes the proposal presented by SGI for optimising and controlling leakage in Athens water supply network. The proposed methodology has been thoroughly applied and tested throughout the world and further evolved to satisfy the Mediterranean conditions. A technology adaptation to the requirements of Athens' network is the "ZOOM" technique which involves "zooming in" on the problem in a series of progressively detailed steps based on the acquisition of knowledge about the operation of the network in each preceding step. Following the procedure specified by SGI, Athens Water Authority EYDAP has selected 5 pilot "red" areas (each one with approximately 100,000 inhabitants) and has awarded the project execution to SGI and other four European specialist consultants who will test and validate their own technologies. On the basis of the achieved results, EYDAP will decide which technology and firm will proceed with the remaining part of Athens' network.
