The paper presents considerations about the mechanisms that control the onset of eutrophication in tropical lakes, The results os some researches carried out in lakes and reservoirs situated in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, are discussed. Due to a more intense primary production, the tropical lakes show different relationships between nutrient concentration and biomass formation in comparison with temperate lakes. The restoration techniques to be implemented in warm water lakes should hence be based on the previous knowledge of the complex mechanisms that determine the eutrophication dynamics.
