摘要
In this paper a knowledge-based methodology is presented for the selection of an appropriate layout for a Flexible Assembly Line. The selection is made from straight-line, U-shaped, zigzag and odd-angled line layouts, based on the overall dimensions of available space and the dimensions of each individual workstation on the line. The information is analysed systematically in a knowledge-based approach which considers the strategic and technical factors in order to reach a consistent decision. A straight-line layout solution is considered first, followed by the simultaneous consideration of U-shaped and zigzag line layouts. Finally the odd-angled line layout is considered. The end result is advice on the best line layout to utilise the available space and to justify the line layout requirements for the system under consideration economically. The methodology is developed in AM which is a rule-based Expert System Shell operating under Microsoft Windows.
