The Morality as a Competence and Its Education: An Overview Based on Moral Development Theories

In recent years, skill-based education has come to the fore as an attempt to bridge the gap between theory and practice in education systems. The primary application area of skill-based education, whose theoretical foundations are based on both behavioural and developmental theories, is vocational education. Along with the curriculum revision carried out in 2018 with other courses in Turkey, Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge curriculum has been structured according to this model. This situation, which is new for morality and education, raises questions about whether morality can be seen as a skill and the possibility of teaching morality with a skill-based understanding. In this context, the aim of the article is to investigate what are the skills that a personality with morals requires and which moral skills should be focused on, for a skill-based moral education. The study was carried out with the descriptive analysis method based on moral development and skills-based education literature.
