Degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by microorganisms from contaminated soil

摘要
In this work, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) degrading capabilities of bacteria from a heavily contaminated site were studied. Enrichment of bacterial populations from top soil layers of Seixal contaminated site produced mixed cultures with significant PAH degrading activity. Obtained enriched mixed cultures were able to degrade to some extent the predominant site contaminants fluoranthene, phenanthrene and pyrene. As expected, PAH with three rings were degraded faster than the tetra-cyclic ones. In addition, degradation of the penta-cyclic benzo(k)fluoranthene was detected.
