Comparison of optical and HRTEM studies of interdiffusion in CdTe/CdMnTe quantum wells

Thermally induced interdiffusion in CdTe/CdMnTe quantum wells was investigated by optical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) measurements. The exciton Zeeman splitting was used to study the concentration profile of manganese ions at the interfaces. HRTEM measurements allowed us to measure the relative change of the lattice constants due to intermixing of manganese ions. The comparison shows that the two methods are complementary: HRTEM is more efficient to study strongly interdiffused structures, while optical methods, being very sensitive at small interdiffusion, become less efficient for broad interface profiles.
