Reaction of 2-amino-4,6-dimethylpyridine with cadmium chloride, HBr and Br-2 in ethanol yeilds bis(2-amino-3,5-dibromo-4,6-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocadmate(II). The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, with tetrahedral distortion of the CdBr42- ion. The cations are arranged in a zig-zag chains that are held together via Br center dot center dot center dot Br, Br center dot center dot center dot pi, pi center dot center dot center dot Br center dot center dot center dot pi and pi-pi interactions. Extensive CdBr42-center dot center dot center dot cation interactions were found and represented in different Br center dot center dot center dot HN (pyridinic and aminic) and Br center dot center dot center dot HCH2 hydrogen bonding along with Br center dot center dot center dot Br motifs.
