A sensitive sensor mounting method for tool breakage detection in milling operations

摘要
The method used to mount a sensor is a key factor in a successful on-line and in-process based monitoring system to detect tool breakage in the milling process of a vertical machining center. The location of the sensor should be where it can receive strong and reliable signals. In this study, only one vibration sensor (an accelerometer) was used for process monitoring. The proposed method of mounting the accelerometer provides less mechanical vibration and the mounted sensor can record strong vibration signals produced by the cutting process. The vibration signal can be used successfully for tool breakage detection.
