The continuing drug overdose crisis in the U.S. has highlighted the urgentneedforgreateraccesstotreatment.ThispaperexaminestheimpactofopeningsandclosingsofsubstanceusedisordertreatmentfacilitiesinNewJerseyonemergencyroomvisitsforsubstanceusedisorderissuesamongnearbyresidents.Wefindthatdrug-relatedERvisitsincreaseby7.4%afterafacilityclosureanddecreaseby6.5%afteranopening.Theeffectsaresmallerforthemiddleagedthanforeitheryoungerorolderpeople,andarealsosomewhatlargerforBlackresidents,andforthoseonMedicaid.Theresultssuggestthatexpandingaccessto treatment results in significant reductions in morbidity related to drugs.
