LKAB is the only Swedish iron ore producer and the largest in the EU. During LKAB's 100-year history the company has undergone a transformation from a conventional mining operation with simple products to a high-tech ore refining company with pellets as its main product. LKAB's activities are centred around ore deposits in that part of Sweden which lies north of the Arctic Circle, at Malmberget and Kiruna. The products are transported year-round to harbours at Narvik in northern Norway and Lulea on the Gulf of Bothnia. Delivery volume in 1996 will amount to 22 million tonnes, 80% of which will be exported and approximately 70% of which will be in the form of pellets. Since the mid-1960s annual pelletizing capacity has increased from about 4m tonnes to 15m tonnes. This address describes LKAB's general development, as well as process and production development in the area of pellets.
