Surface properties of acrylic coatings containing perfluoropolyether chains

New coatings were obtained by using the following perfluoropolyether product (PFEUMA): CF3CF2O (CF2CF2O)(m)(CF2O)(n)CF2CH2OCONHCH2CH2OCOC (CH3)=CH2 m/n=2, M-n =1079 The fluorinated coatings prepared were of two types: Cured films, obtained by photopolymerisation of PFEUMA added to a UV-curable resin; Thermoplastic films, obtained from solution, based on methylmethacrylate-PFEUMA. All coatings, even when the concentration of the PFEUMA was very low (<1% w/w), exhibited hydrophobic and lipophobic properties. XPS analyses showed that the fluorinated monomer preferentially concentrated at the air surface of the films and a fluorine gradient normal to the surface was present. The surface properties of the films could change by changing the substrate or the environmental conditions.
