Influence of lanthanide ions on multiferroic properties of Ba2LnFeNb4O15 (Ln = Eu3+, Sm3+ and Nd3+) thin films grown on silicon by pulsed laser deposition

Highly c-oriented Ba(2)LnFeNb(4)O(15)-based multiferroic composite films with the lanthanide ion Ln = Eu3+, Sm3+ and Nd3+, have been grown by puled laser deposition on platinum-coated (001)-oriented silicon substrates. Investigation of the films functional properties demonstrated that both ferroelectricity and magnetism, originating respectively from the Ba(2)LnFeNb(4)O(15) matrix and the BaFe12O19 inclusions, coexist simultaneously at room temperature and depend on the nature of the lanthanide ion. The evaluation of the degradation of the ferroelectric properties with the number of switching cycles showed that the synthesized films exhibited ferroelectric fatigue, with the notable exception of Ba2NdFeNb4O15 films, attesting their high ferroelectric switching endurance.
