摘要
Background. We measured serum sex hormone and sex hormone binding hormone (SHBG) levels in both men and postmenopausal women, and then tried to investigate the relationships between their serum levels and insulin resistance and NIDDM. Methods. We conducted the study on the reports mentioned, and comparatively analyzed the SHBG, testosterone, which includes both the total and free forms, and estrone in 41 female patients with NIDDM and 40 female controls. The same study was also carried out in 24 male NIDDM patients and seven male controls. Results. We compared the serum levels of SHBG, testosterone (free form and total form) and estrone in both 24 male patients with NIDDM and the seven male control group. In the female NIDDM group, SHBG showed statistically significant lower serum levels than the control group (p<0.002). Other findings did not show any statistical differences between the two groups. In the male group, our study did not show any significant differences in free testosterone and SHBG levels between the diabetic and control groups. Conclusions. Increased androgenesity and a low SHBG level seem to be of significance in the mechanism of NIDDM development in postmenopausal women.
