Skills Acquired by the Students of Study Programme "Translation and Editing of Technical Texts" from the Viewpoint of Mechanical Engineer

Training of the translator has important role for the quality of translation. Texts which have profesional specifics, require knowledge and experience of the translator in the field covered by the text. Only in such conditions the high quality of translations is guaranteed. The Faculty of Humanities of Kaunas University of Technology appliees such methodology in in the study programme Translation and Editing of Technical texts". The study module "Fundamentals of Mechanical engineering" is included into the programme. The analysis of skills of the students carried out on the basis of study results of the mentioned module is presented in the paper. The main objective of the module is to provide knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering, and in this way to support the development of abilities in translating and editing of egnineering field texts. The research performed has no intention to deal with philology aspects of the study programme, nevertheless aspects of the skills acquired by the future graduate as useful for practical cooperation with professional mechanical engineer are discussed. The following methods were chosen for the research: mini conferences with the presentations prepared by students themselves on differnt topics of mechanical engineering, synchronous translation of the engineerig type text, translation of the specialy selected characteristic text, team work. The conclusions are made that the students have sufficient background preparation allowing developing translation skills in the field of mechanical engineering. The cooperation with the professional mechanical engineer for such abilities development plays an important role.
