The need for continuing chronic antiplatelet therapy for coronary artery stents can be challenging and remains controversial in patients undergoing invasive procedures, including surgery and interventional pain treatment. These uncertainties can be best addressed with an understanding of the pharmacology and applicable pharmacogenomics of antiplatelet drugs, continued evolution of the coronary artery stent, and pathophysiology and epidemiology of perioperative MACE with such stents. © 2014, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc.
