Bacterial agents (215) were isolated and identified from 105 clinical and subdinical mastitic milk samples in Jammu region. Staphylococci were predominant causal agent followed by streptococci, Corynebacterium, micrococci, Proteus, E. coli and Pseudomonas. Gentamicin proved the most effective antibiotic followed by ciprofloxacin, streptomycin, tetracycline, amikacin, norfloxacin, chloramphenicol, carbenicillin and kanamycin in descending order. Most of the isolates exhibited a high level resistance against other antibiotics. Pretesting is necessary to find out an effective antimicrobial agent to be used by veterinarians.
