The use of fibrous refractories to line the flues of furnaces was discussed. The low thermal conductivity and good heat-insulating ability of fibrous refractories make them suitable for the purpose. Fibrous refractories have low density and the fact that they can be made in the form of coils, slabs, and mats make them easy to install. The use of fiber-based materials make it possible to enlarge the cross-section of the flue as the layer of fibrous lining material is thinner than the corresponding course of brick.
