New experiments demonstrate quantum optics on a chip

摘要
A method to strongly couple a single atom with a single photon is discussed. Researchers strengthen the interaction between atom and photon by placing an atom inside a small optical cavity bounded by mirrors. The reflective mirrors trap a photon for hundreds or thousands of roundstrips before it escapes. The techniques using customized mesotropic structures like semiconducting dots, wells, and gates an superconducting junctions that can behave like atoms, are also elaborated.
