Education of female students in reproductive health issues in Jeddah: the role of school workers

Objective: To asses the level of knowledge, self confidence, attitude and practices of female school workers in Jeddah in educating items related to reproductive life to the students and to investigate the preparation of school workers for this practice and the factors affecting this process. Subjects and methods: A group of 334 female school workers sampled from all governmental and private schools in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia through a multi stage stratified sample were asked to answer a comprehensive self administered questionnaire to determine their level of knowledge in reproductive issues, self confidence, attitude and actual practice of health education in these issues. Review of the teaching curricula and training programs of teachers in colleges was conducted. Results: Saudi school workers formed most of the group and 90% of respondents were married. Knowledge and self confidence indices of the group were high and their attitude was in favor of educating these items while their practice of explaining these items to students was very low. No correlation was found between this low practice and the characteristics of teachers or other indices. Training of teachers did not prepare them for health education in these items and their college curricula do not have specific teaching objectives in these issues. Conclusion and recommendation: Female school workers have minor role in the health education of reproductive issues to their students despite their high knowledge and favoring attitude. This is mostly due to poor curricula and deficient teachers training. Improvement of teachers preparation in consultation skills and the inclusion of appropriate and proven material within schools and college curricula with specific teaching objectives is recommended.
